LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lexington Sporting Club will face Louisville City FC in the club’s first-ever Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup appearance, it was announced today, setting the stage for what figures to be a highly anticipated initial meeting between the two Commonwealth clubs.
The U.S. Open Cup is a knockout competition open to all professional leagues sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation, including Major League Soccer (MLS), United Soccer League (USL) Championship and League One divisions, National Independent Soccer Association and MLS Next Pro, as well as amateur clubs that qualify through regional competitions.
The two sides meet in the event’s second round the week of April 4-6 at LouCity’s Lynn Family Stadium. The opening rounds take place March 21-23 between qualifying amateur clubs.
U.S. Soccer will announce a specific match day and start time later.
Orlando City SC of MLS won the 2022 trophy, although USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC earned a spot in the finals in an attempt to be the first non-MLS team to claim the title since 1999.
LouCity FC advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2022 event, and Union Omaha represented USL League One’s best showing with a run to the quarterfinals.

Now in its 108th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – U.S. Soccer’s National Championship – has crowned a champion since 1914 in every year except 2020 and 2021. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
The 2023 U.S. Open Cup winner will earn $300,000 in prize money and a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize.
